Finding glasses that fit and compliment your face doesn’t have to be hard. With this list you’ll be able to determine exactly which frames to check out and which styles to stay away from.

First you’ll have to determine your face shape. There are four main categories: oval, heart, round, and square.

Oval: a slightly curved jawline that is slightly narrower than the forehead as well as high and angled cheekbones.

Heart: a broad forehead and small chin with high and angled cheekbones.

Round: full cheeks, a wide forehead, and a rounded chin.

Square: a broad forehead and a strong, horizontal jawline - proportional in width and length.

Once you have determined your face shape you can then narrow down your frame options.

Oval: Lucky you, with the most versatile face shape you can pull off basically any style. Try your favorite square or round styles with dark or lightly colored frames.

Heart: Go for oval and round frames that are thin and lightly colored. Avoid top-heavy styles, decorative designs, and dark frames.

Round: Square or strong, angular shapes (like cat eyes, and retro squares) will add dimension to your face. Avoid frames that are too small, short, or round as all of these will add extra width and curviness to your face.

Square: Thin frames that are round or oval add softness to boxy features. Glasses without rims can help to soften features as well. Dark and boldly colored glasses work well on a square face. Avoid geometric and square shapes as well as light colored rims.

Bonus Advice

As discussed earlier, some face shapes go better with lighter or darker rims. Did you realize your skin tone, eye color, and hair color also play roles here?

Warm color: skin tones that are yellow, peachy, or have golden undertones. Hair colors with red and gold (described as golden, bronze, and copper). Eye colors like brown, hazel, light brown and green. Choose frames that are camel, khaki, gold, copper, peach, orange, coral, off-white, bright red, warm blue, and blonde tortoise.

Cool color: skin tones that are pink, red, or have bluish undertones. Hair colors described as ash, platinum, and champagne. Eye colors like blue-green, light blue, dark blue, and brown-black. Choose frames that are black, silver, rose-brown, blue-gray, plum, magenta, pink, jade, blue, and demi-amber tortoise.
