While the list of laser surgeries is extensive, there are two basic types in practice today.
PhotoRefractive Keratectomy removes the epithelial layer, reshapes the cornea, and then as the epithelial layer grows back, vision improves.
Lasik removes the outer layer with a microblade. The eye is then shaped with a laser, and the flap is returned.
In both cases, the eye is reshaped to change the vision of the patient. The big difference is in the technology applied to get that result. In PRK, the outer layer of cells is completely removed, and must grow back, while Lasik removed them and then puts them back, allowing a faster, and sometimes immediate, full vision restoration while the PRK causes vision to improve as the eye heals.
Both of these methods are used for elective surgeries to correct astigmatism, near- and far-sightedness. Although these vision problems can be corrected with contact lenses or glasses, many people would rather not wear them. For those people, surgery is an amazing corrective tool.
Tri-County Eye Clinics use three basic approaches.
· LASIK; an acronym for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, this surgery heightens visual acuity.
· YAG LASER; this yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser is designed for use with glaucoma treatments, where it is used to punch through the iris and relieve pressure. It also is used in the treatment of cataracts.
· ARGON LASER; using ionized argon gas, this laser is designed for cauterizing and coagulation blood supplies within the eye. It is often used for detached retina surgery, cancer treatment, and tumor removal.
While Lasik is an elective (voluntary) surgery, the other two types of surgery are indicated to correct major health issues.
If you are considering elective surgery, there are a few pre-qualifiers which you may want to consider. You should be at least 18 years of age with a stable eyesight prescription. Your eyes should be in general good health, with good eye pressure and a healthy cornea. There should be no history of eye infection or disease. There are certain parameters for each surgery which should match your prescription
