Retinal Arterial Macroaneurysm (RAM) is a weakening of the artery wall of a larger retinal blood vessel. Although uncommon, RAM usually develops in older, hypertensive individuals. Those who suffer from RAM may be asymptomatic or may begin experiencing sudden vision loss.
How RAM is Diagnosed
Retinal Arterial Macroaneurysm is typically diagnosed during a dilated retinal exam. The RAM will usually appear as a yellow round spot along the course of a retinal artery near the optic nerve. Patients may have macular blood present, as well.
How do you treat RAM
When it comes to treatment, macular blood typically resolves itself over the course of several weeks to months. However, depending on the extent of RAM and your symptoms, it can be treated with intravitreal injections or laser photocoagulation. Symptomatic macular edema is often treatable, however, the return of vision can vary. Some patient’s vision recovers, while others may experience permanent central vision loss.
