It’s that time of the year again where allergies become rampant and no one is truly prepared to fight them off. No matter how prepared you think you are with your allergy medicine and holistic tea that is supposed to cure your side effects in one cup, nothing prepares you for when your eyes dry up.
So how do you fight dry eyes? Eye drops seem to be everyone’s go-to remedy for their allergy-fighting arsenal. Say you don’t have eye drops at your disposal, however? If you are at home grab a cloth and put it under warm water, wring it out and lay it over your head. Often times, dry eyes are a result of clogged oil-making glands. When there is clogged oil, mucus, and water- your eyes cannot lubricate properly or maybe not at all.
Something may smell fishy here. That’s because the omega-3 fats in fish such as salmon or mackerel can help in the production of lubricating tears. If you do not like fish, then there is a pill form for omega-3 or eat plenty of walnuts which also contain this super fat.
Whenever you are at home, pull out your humidifier. What this genius invention will do is create moisture in the air, which is something we can always use to hydrate our eyes. If you do not have a humidifier, try placing a pan of water in front of your heater and it will have the same effect. Creating humidity in the air does mean more comfort on your eyes. Please be aware that this is not a fool-proof guarantee and that you will need a humidifier that matches with the square footage you are trying to humidify. A small humidifier will not stand a chance against a large 3,000 sq. ft. home. So please keep that in mind when you are searching for dry eye relief.
Drinking enough water has so many benefits that no one can even count. Drinking water and staying hydrated is a huge help with dry eyes too. Consuming water will keep your eyes moist. Always shoot for 8-10 glasses of 8 oz. of water a day. This will ensure that you are properly hydrated. Foods such as cucumber or watermelon contain a lot of water so if you aren’t a fan of good ole water, just eat your water and enjoy some relief.
